Decentralized STP for wastewater treatment and reuse

SIGMADAF designs and manufactures decentralized, compact and modular plants for water treatment and wastewater reuse. They are delivered in portable containers and allow water treatment at the point of need, reducing infrastructure costs, speeding up installation and guaranteeing a scalable, automated and efficient system. With high-performance technology and a design adaptable to any environment, our decentralized plants guarantee access to quality water in any location.

At SIGMADAF we design and manufacture decentralized plants for water treatment and wastewater reuse.

These units can operate in urban, rural or industrial environments.

All our decentralized plants are delivered fully assembled and ready to operate inside a container, which is designed to facilitate plant operation and protect the equipment in any outdoor location.

SIGMADAF has a wide range of decentralized solutions for water treatment and wastewater reuse:

What is decentralized wastewater treatment?

Decentralized treatment consists of locating water treatment plants at the point of supply, demand, or both. This solution is a flexible and sustainable alternative to large treatment plants that require a large infrastructure with high transportation and distribution costs.

Decentralized plants are a viable solution for wastewater treatment and water reuse, even in areas not connected to traditional networks, as they operate autonomously inside portable, quickly installable containers. Thanks to these systems, water treatment can be carried out in any location, no matter how remote or inaccessible it may be.

Membrane bioreactors (MBR)

MBR systems combine biological treatment with membrane filtration to efficiently remove organic matter and suspended solids, producing high-quality effluent suitable for reuse or discharge.

Moving bed bioreactors (MBBR)

MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor)systems use suspended plastic media to optimize bacterial growth and enhance the degradation of organic pollutants, offering a compact system capable of treating large volumes of wastewater with minimal maintenance requirements.

MBR/MBBR hybrid bioreactors

The combination of both technologies in MBR/MBBR reactors allows for advanced treatment with higher pollutant load removal capacity and greater stability in operation.

Decentralized membrane filtration plants

Our membrane filtration systems are specifically designed to increase the treatment capacity of existing plants or to be integrated into new facilities. They use flat-sheet membranes to efficiently remove particles, microorganisms, and dissolved contaminants. Thanks to their compact, modular design, installation and commissioning can be completed in less than 24 hours.

Benefits of decentralized STP

Decentralized plants for water treatment and wastewater reuse offer a number of key advantages over traditional systems:

  • No civil works have to be carried out, as they are pre-assembled plants, ready to operate immediately.
  • Plants located close to sources of supply and/or demand eliminate high infrastructure costs for transportation.
  • Decentralized systems are more scalable than traditional plants. Their modular design and rapid construction allow for easy capacity increases, while reducing the risk of investments in plants that become obsolete before they are amortized.
  • Smaller scale projects can avoid complex political negotiations and encourage local control of treatment systems.
  • In the industrial sector, they make it possible to control water quality at each facility and improve community relations by reducing ecological impacts and competition for local water resources.
  • Low energy consumption and reduced use of chemicals.
  • They are compact systems that take up little space and can be relocated as needed.
  • Fully automated plants with remote monitoring to optimize processes and reduce operating costs.
  • It is a very flexible solution that allows the management of water from various sources: wells, rivers, lakes, groundwater, seawater, wastewater, etc.

Applications of decentralized STP

We have designed and installed decentralized plants for a wide variety of applications:

  • Water supply in remote or hard-to-reach communities.
  • Response to emergencies and natural disasters.
  • Wastewater treatment in industries and small communities.
  • Water supply for temporary facilities (mining, construction, camps).
  • Educational campuses
  • Shopping malls
  • Resorts
  • Golf courses
  • Industrial plants
  • Mining, oil and gas camps
  • Construction work
  • Etc.

High-performance technology in a compact format

Decentralized plants combine high efficiency and performance technologies with a compact format. These features make access to high quality water possible and more accessible than ever before for all types of users. SIGMADAF's containerized plants can be designed for any type of location and application.

Although decentralized treatment is not new, technological and logistical challenges have limited its implementation in the past. However, recent advances and our high investment in R&D are transforming this equipment into a viable, fast and effective option for projects in different sectors and regions.

  • These are pre-engineered plants that are FAT tested at source for quick and easy start-up.
  • Assembled in standard containers, minimizing the need for site preparation and construction work. Low visual impact on the environment where they are installed.
  • They have a compact design, with low noise and odor emissions.
  • They are portable and can be easily transported by ship, train or truck.
  • They are scalable, allowing units to be added or removed as needed. These units can be reused or sold for other applications.
  • They are designed to withstand extreme weather conditions and have corrosion resistant coatings.
  • Incorporate intelligent technology for remote monitoring and operation.

A sustainable solution for water-scarce areas

The areas most affected by water scarcity are often small, isolated or under-resourced communities, making access to modern infrastructure difficult. While demand for sustainable water treatment facilities is growing rapidly, the design, financing, permitting, construction and commissioning of conventional plants can take years, with costs that are unaffordable for small communities, resorts or industries with specific needs.

A decentralized treatment strategy offers the efficiency and flexibility needed to meet global water challenges. In an era of water scarcity, it is essential to harness all sources of water, whether treating it to prevent contamination of water bodies or to reuse it safely for irrigation or even human consumption.
