Pretreatment of wastewater containing oils, greases and metals generated in the shot blasting process.
Project location: SNA EUROPE manufacturing plant in Junqueira, Portugal.
Objectives: Pretreatment of wastewater from metalworking industry to remove oil and grease and metal and glass waste from the effluent, prior to its delivery to the aeration tank of a wastewater treatment plant.
Capacity: 10 m3 / hour.
Scenario
The raw materials most commonly used in the metalworking industry are steel, stainless steel, iron and aluminum.
The sector's activities involve the transformation and treatment of metals during which metal shavings are released. In addition, this industry consumes large quantities of lubricating and cooling oils in its processes. These oils, diluted with water, carry metal shavings into the wastewater stream.
In SNA EUROPE's plant they also apply the shot blasting process. The shot blasting process is a surface cleaning treatment technique by impact through which a finish and a correct surface finish is achieved in all types of structures and metal parts. Shot blasting is based on the projection of abrasive particles (shot, consisting of micro-glass beads) at high speed, which upon impact with the treated part produces the elimination of surface contaminants (paint, rust, casting residues, casting material burrs, etc.). The micro-glass beads pass into the wastewater and must be removed.
These metal manufacturing and treatment processes have a high environmental impact, especially in terms of wastewater generation.
